Sonia — Monthly Mix November 2026
An artist in a league of her own, Sonia Delaunay, lived at a pivotal time in art, fashion and design. Born in Ukraine in 1885, Sonia was exposed early to the world of art, especially the pivotal art in Paris at the turn of the Twentieth Century. She settled in Paris and married her husband, Robert Delaunay, in 1910 and the two were a formidable force in art. They were the founders of the Orphism, also called Simultaneism, an artistic movement that believed the artist saw light, color and movement all at the same time. During her life, she not only painted but she designed clothes, costumes for theatrical productions and even shoes. Delaunay believed art was to be seen in everything, not just galleries. She died in 1985 but during her life, she was honored with the first solo show by a living artist at the Louvre in Paris in 1964.
Kate found inspiration for Sonia in Delaunay's most famous painting, Electric Prisms 1914. Growing up in Ukraine, Delaunay was exposed to quilting and was influenced throughout her life by the colorful, geometric repeating patterns in quilts.
Kate has been interested in Ginkos for quite some time, but we just never got around to adding any to our 2-hole bead collection. Finally, for the November Monthly Mix, Kate decided it was time for this graceful shape from Matubo of the Czech Republic. We are so delighted. If they are well-received, we will carry them in individual tubes.

We want to acknowledge One Fashion Question: The Woman Who Painted Fashion: Sonia Delaunay’s Art Revolution as the source for much of the information and visuals on Sonia Delaunay. It's an excellent overview and we recommend watching it.
