The Frida Patch – A Beadshop Studio Exclusive

When I took that fun painting class with the Fresno Fiber Arts Guild a few weeks ago with instructor Lora Wheeler, this colorful Frida-inspired portrait came to life, and I couldn’t resist turning it into something to share with all of you. So many of you commented on the tote bag I made (using my own pattern!) and asked if the image could be used as a patch on a jacket, bag, or sewing project. Well, I did some experimenting, and I’m thrilled to say, yes, it can!

Each Frida Patch is a transfer of my original painting on a durable cotton canvas backing. The colors are rich and vibrant, and the texture has a beautiful, painterly feel that is really enhanced by the canvas fabric.

I washed my test patch in cold on the delicate cycle, just to be sure, and while it did shrink ever so slightly, the color stayed strong and true. I’d call it colorfast, though as with all handmade treasures, a little care goes a long way if you plan to launder it. After washing, the patch will curl, just lay flat on a towel to air dry. I have just used mine unlaundered, as I don't plan on washing the tote that it is on.

The fabric is sturdy enough for bags and home décor but soft enough to embellish further. Stitch on it, bead around it, quilt it... make it your own!
