Russian River

Handout

Project Info:

Level: Intermediate

Estimated time: 4-6 Hours

Project By: By Sam Applegate

In this 1-1/4 inch wide, 15 strand woven bracelet, Sam tells the story of a fast-running California River, the Russian. More intricate than a Beginner nine strand design, this wider cuff is meant to challenge you after you have done one or two of the narrow ones. There is a downloadable PDF of the pattern to follow, as well as the Project Map below. Please watch the video and use the Project Map and printable PDF Graph to assist you when you are building your pattern. All techniques and steps are included in detail in the video, so it is crucial to watch it from start to finish.

The total length of this design from end to end of ultra suede cuff should be your wrist size plus a little bit (1/4-1/2 inch more). The design reads best if it is up against your wrist rather than falling too loosely. Since you cannot take the bracelet off to measure while it is still on the loom, knowing your wrist measurement beforehand is so important. If you need to, you can always make the width of your ultra suede cuff a bit wider for added length. In Sam’s graphing PDF, she has also included additional rows of the pattern for anyone wanting to make their design longer than this sample. Please watch the video before beginning.

It is very tempting to cut your first bracelet off to see how it looks. Very tempting...but think about using all the warp to make more bracelets before you cut your design away. Infact, a design board can make up to twelve bracelets. How? By moving the warp around the board. In the video, Sam goes over how to move the warp around your board to use a new section. Above samples and “practice sections” are done by Beckie Ten Eyck. Thank you, Beckie! And a big thank you to Sam for such a wonderful project.
You rock! So please watch the video and have fun looming and weaving :)) Janice
