Project by Alley Mori
Sample by Drea Carbone
Drea's two newest samples actually take aspects from two Alley projects, Sea Crowns and SuperDuo Cuffs. This update on Alley's classics use a magnetic clasp (much as Alley did in the SuperDuo Cuffs) instead of a button, and wrap just once. A four-way braid widens the cuff just a bit, and adds a fourth color to your piece. Alternatively, use all the same color--why not? The world is your Sea Crown.
This colorway, Helen, could be said to be inspired by Helen of Troy...but that'd be a lie. It's only my excuse to insert the name of an Ocean-traveling royal into a project called Sea Crowns (lol!). In truth, this colorway is a favorite of my friend and fellow beader Helen B. Having met her at one of Janice's Alexandria Bead-Ups years ago, we became fast friends and bead buds. Helen cannot resist the color combo of teal, navy, and yellow...add grays and whites? She might just swoon. And I have to agree...it's a fabulous colorway! In case you didn't know, Helen is my newsletter and project page proofreader, so this project is in tribute and thanks to her for all she does to help behind the scenes.
To create a Sea Crowns in this fashion, cut four pieces of 1.5mm leather to about 10" in length. Use Zap or E6000 to glue into the channel of the clasp side-by side. Allow to dry.
Use clampers to attach to your project tray and macramé each strand in a different color (or the same, you do you!). I measured one wingspan (fingertip to fingertip) of C-Lon for each color, however if this is too long for you to work with you can always cut a shorter length and add more C-Lon. As always, adapt colors, sizes, and anything else to what works best for you.
I created about 7" worth of macramé knots, left the tails intact (more on this in a moment) and created a four-way braid with the four strands. Use a clamper to hold the braid in place when you measure around your wrist for fit.
Once you've got a good length, cut your leather cords and carefully glue into the other end of your magnetic clasp. This can be a bit tricky so have patience and don't panic! Now we get to those macramé ends. You may have noticed that after braiding the macramé is uneven...carefully tie a knot or two wherever needed to even out the macramé lengths. Use a thread burner, or GS Hypo Cement and snips, to finish these ends off.
