Netted Collar
Project Map
Sample by Kate Richbourg
The netted collar design has been around a long time...but no one has made it more famous than Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. When Justice Ginsberg passed away in late 2020 the world lost a serious style icon. Only the second woman ever appointed to the United States’ highest court, she made her mark not only in the government world, but also in our own little creative world of jewelry makers and lovers.
“You know, the standard robe is made for a man because it has a place for the shirt to show, and the tie,” Ginsburg told the Washington Post in 2009. “So Sandra Day O’Connor and I thought it would be appropriate if we included as part of our robe something typical of a woman.” RBG put her personal spin on the traditional garb with a huge variety of necklaces, collars, and jabots...you can see many of them in this 2014 interview with Katie Couric. A particularly notable one was a netted collar just like this, which she dubbed “The Favorite.” Ours, too.
Kate’s two videos go over the making of the netted collar and how to finish it. She uses two colors of seed beads rather than the traditional single hue, making it easier to learn. Of course, as we always say...you do you! But if you’d like to do two colors like Kate you will want 3 tubes of your main color and 1-2 tubes of your secondary color, depending on both the overall length of your necklace and how many rows you add, you may need more tubes!
