Liver of Sulphur XL Gel

1 Fl. Oz Squeeze Bottle

Unit: each
$8.95 USD

Ready to give your copper and sterling a lovely antique patina?  Liver of sulphur in premixed gel form is easy to work with and has been formulated for long shelf life. The squeeze bottle makes measuring painless. It is always recommended that you try out a small piece of metal with the XL Gel before exposing your entire piece. If you are working in mixed metals, it’s best to patina each metal separately before assembly, as different metals can patina at different speeds.

Please note that this solution does not work on brass, nickel silver, gold-filled, aluminum, or on metals that have been coated with an anti-tarnish solution. For best results, store in a cool, dry place and make sure the cap is securely fastened. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Made in America.

Sold by the bottle.

  1. Use in a well-ventilated area and wear eye protection and disposable gloves. Cover work area with paper towels or newspaper.
  2. In a disposable cup, mix 1 tsp. of XL Gel per 12 fl oz/350ml of heated water (about 140 degrees F.) for a dark patina. Adjust mixture ratio and water temperature for desired effect. Gel may be used directly on material to produce the most intense patina.
  3. Suspend object to be antiqued on a scrap piece of copper wire, plastic spoon or chopsticks. Dip the piece in and out of the solution until desired effect is reached. The hotter the solution is, the faster it will darken the metal. Copper metal patinas very rapidly, while sterling silver takes longer to produce a darker patina.
  4. When desired color is reached, rinse the piece under running water to remove all traces of the solution.
  5. Dry piece thoroughly and remove excess patina using a Pro Polish Pad or Steel Wool.
  6. The solution may be poured into a glass jar and reheated over a coffee warmer and reused. If the solution turns clear, that means it has neutralized and will no longer patina metal.
  7. Liver of Sulphur is Sulfurated Potash and is a non-toxic substance. Dispose by flushing down the toilet or allowing it to evaporate. To evaporate, leave the container opened (outside is preferable) and out of reach of children or animals, and it will neutralize in a day or so. Once the yellow solution has turned clear, it can be poured down the drain.
